Can we talk for a minute?

roane72:

In fandom, we talk a lot about the importance of reading and writing slash fiction in regards to the expression of female sexuality and empowerment.  Women writing for other women’s pleasure is incredibly important.  The discussion I want to have isn’t about that.

I want to talk about women writing about other women’s pleasure, which is something that’s of course sorely lacking from m/m fic but is hugely important in f/f fic, which is unfortunately oft forgotten, and m/f fic, which is unfortunately oft maligned.

It’s nsfw under the cut.

There are a LOT of important things going on in this post.

I will say it does seem like contemporary m/f romance, as a genre, has gotten more open about depictions of cunnilingus—I know I tend to write pretty darn graphic scenes including it. If I’m writing anything involving a cis female, it’s pretty much a guarantee.  ;)

"What is significant about fan fiction is that it often spins the kind of stories that showrunners wouldn’t think to tell, because fanficcers often come from a different demographic. The discomfort seems to be not that the shows are being reinterpreted by fans, but that they are being reinterpreted by the wrong sorts of fans - women, people of colour, queer kids, horny teenagers, people who are not professional writers, people who actually care about continuity (sorry). The proper way for cultural mythmaking to progress, it is implied, is for privileged men to recreate the works of privileged men from previous generations whilst everyone else listens quietly."

so i just googled the phrase “toeing out of his shoes” to make sure it was an actual thing

and the results were:

image

it’s all fanfiction

which reminds me that i’ve only ever seen the phrase “carding fingers through his hair” and people describing things like “he’s tall, all lean muscle and long fingers,” like that formula of “they’re ____, all ___ and ____” or whatever in fic

idk i just find it interesting that there are certain phrases that just sort of evolve in fandom and become prevalent in fic bc everyone reads each other’s works and then writes their own and certain phrases stick

i wish i knew more about linguistics so i could actually talk about it in an intelligent manner, but yeah i thought that was kinda cool

Ha! Love it!

One of my fave authors from ages ago used the phrase “a little helplessly” (like “he reached his arms out, a little helplessly”) in EVERY fic she wrote. She never pointed it out—there just came a point where I noticed it like an Easter egg. So I literally *just* wrote it into my in-progress fic this weekend as an homage only I would notice. <3

To me it’s still the quintessential “two dudes doing each other” phrase.

I think different fic communities develop different phrases too! You can (usually) date a mid 00s lj fic (or someone who came of age in that style) by the way questions are posed and answered in the narration, e.g. “And Patrick? Is not okay with this.” and by the way sex scenes are peppered with “and, yeah.” I remember one Frerard fic that did this so much that it became grating, but overall I loved the lj style because it sounded so much like how real people talk.

Another classic phrase: wondering how far down the _ goes. I’ve seen it mostly with freckles, but also with scars, tattoos, and on one memorable occasion, body glitter at a club. Often paired with the realization during sexy times that “yeah, the __ went all they way down.” I’ve seen this SO much in fic and never anywhere else

whoa, i remember reading lj fics with all of those phrases! i also remember a similar thing in teen wolf fics in particular - they often say “and derek was covered in dirt, which. fantastic.” like using “which” as a sentence-ender or at least like sprinkling it throughout the story in ways published books just don’t.

LINGUISTICS!!!! COMMUNITIES CREATING PHRASES AND SLANG AND SHAPING LANGUAGE IN NEW WAYS!!!!!!!

It’s done, folks. Well, for now it is. Modern time Belle/Mulan have reached the end of this mini journey

“How can you say that?!” Jane yelled.
“Jane, please,” Maura begged. “Can’t you see what Casey’s doing to you?” she said, on the verge of tears. She hated when Jane was mad at her.
“I love him! What exactly do you want me to do?”
“He doesn’t deserve you, Jane! You deserve to be with somebody who loves you and will treat you right. I just-“
Tears were streaming down Jane’s cheeks as she spoke. “You just what Maura? You want me to abandon him? You want me to leave him, hurt and alone, and for me to end up alone again?”
Tears were evident in Maura’s eyes as well now. “Jane, please, I-“
“No, I don’t want to hear it, Maura.” Jane said before grabbing her jacket and storming out.
Maura stood in her kitchen, crying, afraid she lost the only thing worth living for left in her life. No, she though, before storming after Jane.
“Jane, wait!” she yelled as she ran down the street towards Jane.
Jane ignored her, and just kept walking. Suddenly, she felt somebody grabbing her arm and spinning her around.
“Maura, stop, I-” Jane said, before Maura grabbed her face with both hands and pressed their lips together.

Oneshot: ‘In The Language of Flowers’

thesilentpen:

Rated: T

Summary:‘Red Chrysanthemums. They mean ‘love’ or ‘I love.’ Rachel Berry stumbles into a florist shop, searching for the perfect gift for her Fathers’ anniversary. She meets Quinn Fabray, the part-time worker, who will change her life and the way she looks at flowers forever. AU

A response to one of two prompts I chose to write.  This one is for my tumblr friend dispiritedaway who prompted “Quinn works at a flower shop and Rachel really likes buying people flowers. She’s really into the meanings of flowers as well, so when she initially goes to said shop she’s asking Quinn about the meanings of all of them. The first set of flowers are for her fathers for their anniversary, second are for her teacher, etc. etc. play this how you will. She starts going to the shop more frequently, buying more and more flowers just to talk to Quinn, and eventually she runs out of people to buy flowers for. Naturally Quinn falls for Rachel, because she’s adorable and ecstatic and perfect, and the last set of flowers have to be gardenias.

Quinn will obviously be disappointed and try to hide it because she has a crush on Rachel (I’m sure you know the meaning of the gardenia being in the Faberry fandom)

but then they end up being for her :P’

So this is for you, dispiritedaway, and I hope you enjoy it.  Let me know what you think :).

I hope you guys enjoy it.
